Discipleship and Connection to the Biblical Mandate

Matthew 28:16-20 (ESV) – “Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them.  And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted.  And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.  Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,  teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.””

Discipleship and Connection to GCCC’s Mission

GCCC exists to make disciples of Christ in the greater DMV region (our Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria) and to the ends of the earth by sharing the gospel, and equipping God’s people for godly living.

A Proposed Definition of Discipleship

There are many ideas about what discipleship is but one definition that is helpful to refocus are the goals of discipleship. The following two goals work in conjunction with one another feeding off of one another where disciples grow in learning God’s word which includes God’s commands. Discipleship also includes teaching others to obey God’s commands in our specific context. Furthermore, as a disciple grows in the understanding of both gospel and God’s commands and are helped to obey the commands for godly living the natural outcome is to see disciples who then invest in disciple making.

Discipleship and Our Spiritual Race

In many ways, our spiritual journey is like running and training for a physical race. It requires both self-discipline as well as help and encouragement from those around us. Let us reflect on how Great Commission as a local body of believers can run this spiritual race together corporately and spur one another on in our individual runs.

Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. But discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified. 1 Corinthians 9:24-27

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us. Hebrews 12:1

While GCCC does not have any formal Discipleship Program at this time, we encourage members who are interested in an intentional discipleship relationship to review resources on discipleship found on our Resources page.
