Putting Off Our Envy

Reflection and response question

1. The ancient church in Corinth seems to have had a serious problem with envy and competition. But they spiritualized it. Read 1 Corinthians 1:10-12 to get a feel for the church’s problem, and read 3:21-23 for Paul’s solution. How does 3:21-23 help us avoid envy and competition?
2. Read Matthew 13:45-46 and Luke 18:29-30. How valuable is God’s kingdom? What are the returns on an investment in following Jesus? What are the “riches” that Jesus gives us?
3. Do you feel rich in Christ? What helps you remember how rich you are in Christ?
4. What have you invited others to celebrate with you, or what have others invited you to celebrate with them? How did that help you not feel envy against them? What could it look like to celebrate our riches in Christ with this group or with the church?
